Dividing the world into two halves for the purpose of investigating and discussing its traditional and folk or its so-called ethnic music is perhaps a dangerous proposition. But if such a division must be made, it seems logical to group together Europe, sub-Saharan Africa, and the Americas. These areas have during the last several centuries come greatly under the influence of Western civilization and its music—and they have influenced the Western high culture also—while the rest of the world appears to have been more under the aegis of the oriental high cultures. Moreover, in an American publication it seems perhaps appropriate to treat together those areas of the world which, broadly speaking, are responsible for the musical culture of the Americas today: Europe, Negro Africa, and |
